TEACH TODAY FOR A SAFER TOMORROW
When we think about the safety of children we immediately think about how we can protect them from danger ourselves. However, the best method to protect children for life will always be education. We can never be there 24/7 for them, as much as we’d like to be. Delivering a message that resonates with the youngest of generations can be difficult, which is why speaking to them on their terms is so important. An energy company in Bundaberg, QLD is putting this in action:
“ A NEW, smaller-sized hero is frequenting the schools, playgrounds and homes of Bundaberg this week with the launch of Ergon Energy's new school safety program, Safety Heroes.
The program launched in almost 700 primary schools this week teaches children the basics of electrical safety into the classroom.
"Electrical safety basics are a 'must have' for all children," Ergon Energy Fraser Burnett lines manager Craig Harris said.
Member for Bundaberg Leanne Donaldson joined Mr Harris at St Mary's Catholic Primary School yesterday to help launch Safety Heroes in the Wide Bay region.
The Safety Heroes program will teach children about how electricity works, home electrical safety, storm and cyclone preparedness, fallen power lines and safety around overhead power lines. “

The image above says it all – turning a dry subject for children into one that speaks their language. Children are sponges for knowledge. It’s up to us to impart our knowledge the right way. When you think about it, kids learn the alphabet through song; they learn life morals through nursery rhymes, they even learn banking and real estate through board games!
These are the lessons that stay with them their whole life, and much of them at home or with friends. These lessons should not be exclusive to the classroom. How can you educate your children, nieces and nephews on electrical safety in a way that will not only reach them but stay with them? How can their friends get involved? How can you get involved? Don’t forget, it might not just save their own lives, but they might one day save the lives of those around them….including yours!
